BE PART OF THE STORY

We are at a critical and transformational moment in the history of Durham, and the American South. Rapid demographics changes, coupled with an accelerated ecomic boom have created a crisis of belonging for the members of the Great Latino Migration and the first generation raised (and born) in the USA struggling to make a home for themselves in a place that more often than not does yet not feel like “home”. This need to belong is universal, it also affects the receiving communities who “don’t recognize their town” anymore because of these accelerated changes.

The (Nuevo)South is a place that holds the shadows cast by our unresolved history and it is also the light generated by our spirit of community, by our struggles to create equitable and just institutions and by our unwavering commitment to shared storytelling.

The Center for the Nuevo South is dedicated to creating spaces of belonging not just for Latino communities but also for everyone looking for community connections and spaces of shared storytelling.
